The actor’s imagination is not intellectual, it is physical, the director can be intellectual, the writer can be intellectual, but the actor’s imagination is always physical. Actors are always trying to avoid the inevitable — getting up — so we talk…then the director talks…then the actors talk back and now we are all chatting about it.
Don’t get me wrong talking is fine, I am not an extremist like Orson :
“[…] most great actors aren’t [smart]. Larry [Olivier] is very—I mean, seriously—stupid. I believe that intelligence is a handicap in an actor. Because it means that you’re not naturally emotive, but rather cerebral. The cerebral fellow can be a great actor, but it’s harder.”
I believe intelligence has its place, and its use in an actor but I also believe that when life does not find a singer to sing her heart, an artist to paint her mood, an actors to express how she feels…she produces a philosopher to speak her mind.
Lets not talk about it.
