He was the first actor to decline the award, having warned the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences months in advance that he would do so on the basis of his belief that performances cannot be compared to others. (None of that Marlon Brando stuff) He really declined the award, no gimmicks, no showboating, no publicity stunts, his award is still in the academy’s archives with his name on it, he never collected the damn thing!
