Some thoughts on emotions

I WANT TO CRY ON CUE SHE/HE SAID!

Well guess what now you are a dry well

Don’t go chasing emotions, don’t try to squeeze your emotional sponge to get one tear out! What’s the point?

You can only create the conditions for an emotion to appear.

-UNDERSTAND THE CIRCUMSTANCES — PLAY YOUR ACTIONS! Make sure there is something you have to try to overcome.

-Find personal meaning in what the character is doing or saying and trust me emotions will come!

I saw an interview the other day with an amazing illustrator of graphic novels. While he was drawing a hero with bursting muscles blasting a villain through a concrete wall, the illustrator’s face started changing. At first, I thought it was the effort it took to make such a detailed drawing but then I realized he had the same expression his hero had, he was angry, and his face became angry, he was not faking it, he was angry in the moment even his drawing hand moved differently! After a while, he started showing signs of desperation and that mixed feelings of surprise he was now the villain with his head through the wall.

The journalist asked him about it and his response was “ I can’t help it” “ I feel what they feel in the moment while I am drawing them”

Brilliant! In a way, he was doing what Milton Katselas was referring to as “assuming the position”

Be in the moment, embrace the situation and you will start feeling and believing in it! Do something about it and you will get involved!
